The classic «Birkebeinerrennet», the Birken Ski Race covers 54 kilometers and is a classic style race. The start is at Rena and the finish at the Birkebeineren ski stadium at Lillehammer. Participants must carry a rucksack weighing at least 3.5 kg at any point during the race. The number of participants is limited to 17,000.

The success of this race is the forerunner of the two other races; Birkebeinerløpet and Birkebeinerrittet. The latter is a bicycle race over 94.6 km, which also starts from Rena and ends at  Lillehammer. The cyclists must also carry a rucksack weighing at least 3.5 kg. As many as 17,500 take part in this race every year.

Birkebeinerløpet is the final race you must conclude to be able to call yourself a Birkebeiner Triple participant. The race starts at the Birkebeineren Ski stadium and finishes at Håkons Hall in Lillehammer. The length of the course is 21 kilometers.
